The most typical question customers ask when acquiring a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: will I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different types available, it can be challenging for the buyer to choose between those technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up a comparable level of image quality.
Imagine a set of blinds in your home over your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel operates like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is formed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from when the projector is turned on to when the image reaches your screen is vitally important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 individual LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to send the projector image. An important point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your wall at once. The way a DLP projector operates is totally different and even the way an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the top level of brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have placed a white segment in the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this also degrades colour accuracy.
I see in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better. For those who are unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is able to produce. DLP projectors do provide high contrast specifications when compared to most LCD projectors. Initially, this appears to be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you are trying to view requires moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are shone. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because the colours are sent simultaneously. DLP builders have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up artifacts, but the price of these projectors make them not practical for many businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and they taught you how various colours of light refract different amounts when projected through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light in a different way. Often with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will be projected above and some blue will come up below something as simple as a straight black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is projected on isolated LCD panels.
The only true buy point (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is important to you, then the decision is a no-brainer. Go for an LCD projector! LCD projectors will consistently make bright, colourful images with fewer image blips. As the Dutch found dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht had been a leisure craft used initially by royalty and later by the burghers in the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private matches. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting rose as fashionable for the affluent and aristocracy, but after that point the trend did not last.
The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other groups, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).
Yacht racing began in some ordered method on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it was then named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continuing setting of British yachting. The organisation at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great stakes were held, and the club life was superlative. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to more than 350 tons.
In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English took dominance. Sailing was for the most part for leisure and rose to its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and created a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.
Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was first heavily impacted by the success of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its win at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and manufactured in a contemporary sense, with just a model for an outline. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what it had done earlier for hulls.
Because nearly all sailboats were individually built, there was a desire for handicapping boats as this was previous to the one-design class boats were built. Hence, a rating rule was decreed, which is found in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between those boats can be done on an even basis with no handicapping required. A prime example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.
As long as yachting belonged largely for the nobility and the rich, money was no object, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and preference of smaller craft happened in the second half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of smaller yachts. Following this in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.
Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam began to replace sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in leisure boats. Sizeable power yachts were developed to a high degree, and long-distance sailing was a preferred occupation of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to yachts powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.
From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Notably within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service during World War II.
As larger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were created, many big yachts started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. From the decade following, large power-yacht building grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the best auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.
The building of large power boats fell away after 1932, and the style from then was for smaller, less costly yachts. Following World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting is a internationally popular activity enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually owning and maintaining their own small recreational boats. The number of boats and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Taxes are distinguished by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that applies the same relative burden on every taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income grow in relative proportion. A progressive tax is characterized by a higher than proportional growth in the tax burden relative to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional growth in the comparable liability. Ergo, progressive taxes are regarded as taking away inequity in income distribution, while regressive taxes are believed to have the result of increasing these inequalities.
The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so in the upper-income class—in particular if a taxpayer is allowed to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some certain income components from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income categories would also be more progressive if personal exemptions are made.
Income measured over the period of a year may not definitely come up with the most appropriate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory rises in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer may choose to pay for consumption by reducing savings. Therefore, if taxation is made comparable along with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than if held in comparison with annual income.
Sales taxes and excises (save those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the share of personal income consumed or spent for a specific good lessens as the level of personal income rises. This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden is dependant for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.
In assessing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates will be dictated in the law; generally these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Hence, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax statutes often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates should consider provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, as it may rely on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates commonly increase with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; conversely, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households could dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that fall as income rises.
